Biography
Before starting The Brain Health Center Of Maryland, Dr. Mathews was an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (2003-2010) where he specialized in the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy and where he directed a research laboratory. Dr. Mathews’ research has focused on the role of the metabolism of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in normal brain function and in seizures. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and by the CURE foundation. He has authored more than 14 original research articles published in pre-eminent scientific journals such as Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Neurochemistry, Neuron and Nature Medicine and numerous reviews and book chapters on epilepsy. Dr. Mathews has been a reviewer for numerous scientific and clinical journals and was a contributing editor for Epilepsy Currents, the official journal of the American Epilepsy Society. In 2009 he was inducted as a fellow of the American Neurological Association, and he has held leadership roles in the American Epilepsy Society.
He is currently the Medical Director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the Electroencephalography (EEG) Laboratory at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, an NAEC accredited Epilepsy Center.
